An Appeal for Donation from Probashi Bengali Christian Association
We are well aware of the unprecedented disaster caused to Japanese cities by one of the five most destructive earthquakes in recorded history at 2.46 p.m. Japan time and 12.46 a.m. NY time on Friday, March 11, 2011. The worst-hit areas are the coastal cities to the north and north-east of Japan including the city of Sendai, closest to the epicenter. The 30 feet high tsunami triggered by the tremor rushed inland at about 500 miles per hour speed tearing houses from foundations killing most of the residents, smashing vehicles against walls and sweeping them back to the sea. Thousands of lives were extinguished in no time. Thousands died in the sea. Families have been torn apart. The few surviving members are frantically looking for the rest lost. In one residential area people buried under rubble were heard calling, “Help, help us” and “When will we be rescued?” Over 10,500 people have been reported dead and 88, 000 missing. Thousands have been injured. 55,000 are in shelters now. The number of people reported dead and the number in shelters are rising. No Government alone has resources sufficient to cope with the crisis of these proportions. It is a global challenge. The Japanese Prime Minister and Ambassador in the U.S.A have appealed to the International Community for help. Yesterday night on CNN the Japanese Ambassador appealed to individual Americans for help as well. He said, “I request American people also for help. We will accept help from every individual American with appreciation.” On 12th night CNN host asked a Japanese lady about her impression of the situation while she was in the area devastated. At a point while she was reporting she could not hold tears. She cried and said, “I request everybody for help. We need help, help us, help us; here we don’t have electricity, gas, water and food. It is freezing cold here. Help us, we need help.” Almost 90 countries have already participated in the rescue and relief operations. U.S. Military personnel and American Red Cross workers are actively engaged in these operations. Japanese troops are collecting dead bodies and rescuing whoever is found alive under rubbles. Can we do anything for our Japanese brothers and sisters? Of course we can. We can be with them in our prayers and help them in the form our donations which they need most now. As per decision of the Board, we appeal to all Bengali Christians for donations for helping the earthquake and tsunami victims of Japan. Please write your check favoring Probashi Bengali Christian Association and mail it to: PBCA, P.O. BOX 1568, NEW YORK, NY 10159
